Florida teacher redefines n-word to Black student in AP history class

LEE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA/WBBH) — A Florida history teacher caught on a now-viral Tik Tok video redefining the N-word is under investigation.

Although you never see his face in the video, you can hear the Island Coast teacher making what many said are racially insensitive comments.

The teacher heard in the video is heard telling his students that slave owners didn’t whip their slaves. He also said the “n” word just means stupid or ignorant.

Many people on social media are outraged by his comments.

Community Advocate Earl Sparrow said the teacher was clearly playing judge, jury prosecutor and security by controlling the discussion.

“We’re going to have a conversation with you where I hold all the power and you hold none. That’s not fair,” Sparrow said.

The student who posted the video is known only as Hector captured the moment when his teacher redefines the “n” word.

Lee School Board member Gwynetta Gittens said the word has so much more meaning and deeper hurt.

Merriam Webster defines the n-word as an ethnic slur directed toward a black person.

The teacher continues in the video insisting that it means a person is not well educated.

Some on social media are questioning.

“It’s really a grey area in the law,” said Attorney Jeff Haught.

Haught represents clients in privacy law matters and he argues the student may not have violated the law.

“If you’re in your place of business for example you don’t have an absolute right to privacy,” Haught said.

The video has now been viewed over 2-million times.
