TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida teenager was seriously injured in a shark attack off the coast of Keaton Beach Thursday, according to reports.
The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and rescue personnel were called to help 17-year-old Addison Bethea who was bitten by a hark while scalloping near Grassy Island.
According to officials, the nearly 9-foot shark was aggressive and attacked her several times until her brother was able to separate the shark from his sister. The attack reportedly happened in waters that were five feet deep
“Thanks to the help of her brother, Rhett Willingham, who is a Firefighter/EMT in Taylor County, and several other local boaters, Addison survived,” a news release from Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare said. “They were able to work together to tie a tourniquet to control the bleeding until Addison could be airlifted to the Bixler Trauma & Emergency Center at TMH.”
Officials added that Addison suffered “devastating damage” to her right leg. She is scheduled to undergo a second surgery on Saturday, July 2 so doctors can review the extent of the damage to her leg and determine what treatment options are available.
“Addison’s family would like to thank their community in Taylor County and everyone who has reached out offering their prayers and support during this difficult time,” TMH said.
