BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (WFLA) – An 8 On Your Side investigation uncovered computer glitches within insurance giant Florida Blue that have caused customers to not get the coverage they paid for.

And even worse, one customer says the insurance company demanded her doctors return all claim money if paid in 2015.

“I’m 65,” said Marla Banta, of Brooksville. “This shouldn’t be happening. It really shouldn’t. We didn’t do anything wrong.”

Banta had a Florida Blue insurance policy under the Affordable Care Act for 2014 and 2015. She opted out of the plan for 2016 because she was turning 65 years old on February 26 and would be able to get coverage through Medicare.

But for some strange reason, Banta continued to receive bills for 2016 coverage and then something awful happened, affecting her 2015 coverage. Doctors, Banta says, started calling her last week wanting money. She was informed that Florida Blue called her many doctors to let them know she actually did not have coverage in 2015 and that the doctors needed to send money for all paid claims back to the insurance company.

“I don’t know what to do,” Banta told 8 On Your Side. “There is no way I could ever afford to pay all of those bills … I’ve got to talk to every single doctor, every single hospital, every single everybody and explain this to them.”

Banta says calling Florida Blue got her nowhere, and she fears doctors won’t see her with all of these outstanding bills.

She’s not the only one calling 8 On Your Side with a Florida Blue nightmare. Since January, 8 On Your Side has heard from numerous customers with billing or coverage issues. Many blame computer glitches. State regulators have jumped in to help customers when asked to by 8 On Your Side.

On Monday Florida Blue spokeswoman Christie Hyde DeNave said the company is aware of the issues. She sent this statement and advice for customers experiencing problems:

“We are working diligently to address some technical issues that have come up for a limited number of our members and their Marketplace plans. The enrollment process relies on the converging of data from a number of independent systems from both government and private organizations. The complexity of this gathering and verifying of data has resulted in some individual members having issues.”

The statement continues:

“To help manage this situation, Florida Blue has taken the following steps:

· Added additional staff to work with doctors and other care providers to make sure our members have access to care

· Added additional staff to process and manage enrollment situations

“We truly appreciate the patience shown by our new and returning members, and we will continue to address these issues as quickly as possible. Those affected in the Tampa Bay area can visit our Florida Blue Center locations for in-person assistance. The Centers are located in Westshore, in Carrollwood Commons, in The Shoppes at Park Place in Pinellas Park, and near The Mall at University Town Center in Sarasota.”<< READ MORE 8 ON YOUR SIDE INVESTIGATIONS HERE >>TOP CLICKED STORIES OTHERS ARE READING:
