WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. (WFLA) –  Florida Highway Patrol troopers say a Pasco woman was drunk when she plowed into five mailboxes and hit a dumpster, then abandoned the vehicle and two injured children.

Troopers say Cecilia Yvonne Tapia, 25, of Zephyrhills told them she blacked out because she had been drinking.

Troopers responded to the crash scene at 7:52 p.m. They found a red, Chrysler SUV on Brisk Drive in Wesley Chapel. The SUV had heavy damage to the front and undercarriage. The airbags were deployed and there was blood on the driver’s side airbag and on a tissue on the rear seat. Troopers say there was an open 6-pack of Bud Lite Platinum in the vehicle.

Relatives told troopers that the Tapia was taken to Florida Hospital Zephyrhills by other family members. Two children were also in the car and were injured, but Tapia failed to get medical attention for them. It was not until another family member arrived that medical attention was sought.

Troopers say they discovered heavy damage to five mailboxes and a dumpster on Brisk Drive.

Troopers responded to Florida Hospital Zephyrhills and interviewed Tapia, who allegedly told them that she blacked out because she had been drinking. She failed a sobriety test and was arrested on a charge of DUI. She was also charged with two counts of DUI with damage to property and two counts of child neglect.
