A former Miami Dolphins cheerleader claims she faced discrimination after revealing she is a virgin and devout Christian. Now she’s filing a discrimination complaint against the NFL with her Sarasota lawyer, Sara Blackwell.
Kristan Ann Ware said her lifelong dream of being a professional dancer came crashing down when she claims she was bullied by team leaders.
The 27-year-old describes the exact moment her virginity unexpectedly became the topic of conversation during a Dolphin team trip in London.
She remembers it happened during a bus ride. “Just girl talk, you know, they were talking about sex playlists and things like that.” She says when she didn’t chime in on the conversation, a team member called her out.
“I said, ‘Well, you know this is my personal conviction that I have from God and I have a “true love waits” ring and I have a vow to wait for marriage’,” she recalled.
Ware she says not long after that trip, she walked into an interview she describes as a “hopeful third year.”
“I sat down with my director and my coaches and they said, ‘Let’s talk about your virginity.’ And something in me said I don’t think this is right. I explained the girl talk and the bus in London. I explained that and they said, ‘As far as we’re concerned, you’ve taken something that was once upon a time pure and beautiful and you’ve made it dirty’,” she said.
“So, I just sat there and I was like, ‘Whooooah.’ I was really shocked. It was like a bus hit me,” said Ware.
And while she eventually quit the team, one thing she maintains till this today is her vow of virginity.
“I want to save this for just one person and I want it to be special.”
After her complaint was filed with the Florida Commission on Human Relations, Dolphin team leaders responded saying: “We hold every member of our organization to the same standards and do not discriminate as it relates to gender, race and religious beliefs.”
