TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – The heroic German shepherd called Haus who reportedly protected a 7-year-old girl from a snake bite was discharged from the hospital Thursday.
The past week has introduced the DeLuca family to a rollercoaster of emotions. On May 11th, the family’s dog Haus was bitten three times by a rattlesnake in the backyard of the family’s New Tampa home.
Donya and Adam DeLuca believe the German shepherd took the bites protecting their 7-year old daughter Molly. Haus was released from the hospital on Thursday afternoon.
At first, the couple wasn’t sure Haus was going to make it.
They brought the dog to BluePearl Veterinary Partners off of Busch Boulevard in Tampa, where the dog has been treated with multiple vials of anti-venom. Dr. Danielle Pollio was one of the treating physicians.
“We were really concerned with how serious his wounds were,” Dr. Pollio said. “As a veterinarian, this is why I do my job. To have a very severely injured, critically ill patient that makes it out of the hospital and gets to go home.”
Haus even received a Heroic Dog Award from PETA for his actions.
A friend of the family set up a GoFundMe account to help with vet bills. The goal was to raise 28-thousand dollars, but the fund has already tipped the scale at more than $52,000.
The couple plans to donate the funds left after Haus’s treatment to area pet rescue organizations. “Heidi’s legacy is our rescue of choice,” Donya Deluca explained. “We have a couple of other favorites too. We’ve already donated to Franki’s Friends, as well.”
BluePearl’s parent company learned about Haus and decided to donate a year’s worth of pet food to the family. The DeLuca’s decided to forward that donation to a pet rescue organization as well.
The story garnered national, even international attention. Donya DeLuca is still amazed by the support the family received from all over. “I feel grateful for everything.” Said DeLuca.
