ST. ANDREWS STATE PARK, Fla. (WFLA)  – A doe and yearling were safely guided back to shore by Florida wildlife officials after the two had become stranded in the Gulf of Mexico near Panama City Beach.

A concerned kayaker flagged down Maj. Bruce Cooper, according to a post on MyFWC’s Facebook page.

Cooper searched the area and spotted two small heads in the water more than 1,000 yards from shore. As he approached the deer, officials said, they appeared fatigued and disoriented from trying to fight the waves.

Cooper was able to guide them back toward shore. When the doe and her yearling finally reached the beach, “they ran to safety over the dunes and into St. Andrews State Park,” according to the FWC Facebook page.
