LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) – Police are investigating a confrontation that led to the death of a Lakeland teen early Saturday.
On March 26 around 4:46 am, Lakeland Police Department officers responded to a shooting at Willow Glen Apartments on North Gilmore Avenue.
Investigators say an armed security guard, Shawn Plain age 19, was inside of the laundry room charging his cell phone when he saw a teen enter the laundy room with a handgun pointed at him.
Plain then felt several stinging sensations on his face and thought he had just been shot in the face.
At this same time, Plain observed what he thought were several more people looking into the laundry room when the shooting occurred, and several of them had handguns.
Plain told police he was in fear of his life so he pulled his weapon, and the suspects began to back up into the parking lot. Plain exited the laundry room with his weapon in hand, and the suspects continued to point their weapons at him as he took cover.
The suspects turned to run away and Plain fired several rounds at that time. One of the suspects was hit once in the back of the leg and fell to the pavement. The other suspects ran away and were not captured.
A Ruger pellet gun was found on the pavement in the area where a suspect was shot in the leg.
Investigators say Plain returned to the laundry room to retrieve his cell phone and call 911. At that time, the person who Plain had shot, asked Plain to call him an ambulance and also apologized for shooting at him.
The suspect who was shot later died as a result of the gunshot injury. He has been identified as Stephen Brenor, age 15. Police say Brenor is a documented associate gang member. An autopsy will be conducted on Monday to determine his cause of death.
Plain was transported to Lakeland Regional Health and treated for two pellet wounds to his face.
On Monday morning, detectives announced that Javarius Ray’quann King, age 16, of Lakeland admitted to participating in the aggravated assault against security officer Plain. King was arrested on charges of 2nd Degree Felony Murder and Aggravated Battery.
Detectives continue to investigate the shooting.
