Classmates mourn student killed in motorcycle crash in Hillsborough

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) – Grief counselors were on hand at Alonso High School Monday morning to help students cope with the death of a classmate.

Kenneth Gordils, 19, was killed in a motorcycle crash over the weekend, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. State troopers say Chanda Venkatesh failed to yield to the right-of-way of Gordils. He took evasive action to prevent a crash but struck the BMW Venkatesh was driving. He was thrown off his bike and died on scene, troopers report.

Gordils was a member of the Junior ROTC at Alonso High School.

On Facebook, classmates said he was a great cadet and a terrific guy.

“I was in complete shock,” said classmate Eric Ayala, who’s also part of the JROTC. “I had no idea about the death. I never would have saw it coming.”

Students came together Sunday night and held a candlelight vigil to remember Gordils at the crash site along Hillsborough Avenue. They left flowers, balloons and candles.

Principal Kenneth Hart sent a phone message to students and parents:  “I’m sure many of you are already aware of the tragic news I’m about to share with you.  I am very sadden to inform you that we lost a senior student last evening in a motorcycle accident.”

Gordils worked at YouFit Health Club, not far from his high school. Assistant Manager Alex DeGracia tells News Channel 8 he was a hard worker and enjoyed his job.

“He was like a brother to me,” DeGracia said. “I watched him slowly develop into the man he was becoming. And [it’s] definitely sad to see him go.”

FHP reports Gordils was wearing a helmet. Charges are pending against the driver.WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON RIGHT NOW:
