(WTEN) – Victoria McGrath, one of the survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing, was killed in a car accident overseas. WTEN spoke to the family of the firefighter who hailed as a hero and became close friends with McGrath after the 2013 bombing.
A picture of Jim Plourde carrying an injured Victoria McGrath to safety became an iconic symbol of the mantra ‘Boston strong’. This was a start of a great friendship
The Plourde’s became so close with Victoria that they considered her family.
News10 spoke with Jim’s mother who had just returned from a long ride home from Boston.
“We never expected that the Boston bombing would’ve produced a friendship so deep, and so kind,” said Jane Plourde.
A friendship that began with a very iconic picture. Colonie native and Boston Firefighter Jim Plourde carried an injured Victoria McGrath to safety after the Boston Marathon bombing.
But Monday, Jim’s mother Janet said they are heartbroken after learning Victoria died in a car crash in Dubai, along with a classmate from Northeastern University.
Janet said the 2013 bombing created a bond between her family and Victoria, one that was both unexpected and unbreakable.
“We saw each other at Christmas. We took her out for her birthday in January, and she was at our youngest granddaughter’s baptism. It’s unending the amount of connection that developed because of that one horrific incident of the Boston marathon bombing,” said Jane Plourde.
That connection was seen when News10ABC interviewed Jimmy one year after the bombing.
“We’ve become close friends. She’s become friends with my wife, she’s been over to see our kids,” said Jimmy Plourde.
Jim was hailed as Victoria’s hero but Janet said it was in fact Victoria who saved her son.
“The devastation that he saw that day it could’ve, it changes your life. But instead it was the family’s relationship and Jimmy’s relationship with her in particular changed that. It brought him back into the light,” said Jane Plourde.DON’T MISS THESE STORIES OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON:
