LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) — Publix customers looking for a good deal may have thought they found one in a coupon that is circulating online.

Publix customer Jean Frady said of the coupon that offers $75 off a purchase of $80 or more “I think it has to be phony.”

Frady isn’t falling for the fake coupon that has turned up on social media websites.

She added, “I don’t like that because usually the people they fool are older people and I don’t like that but I am little bit wiser,I know you can’t get $75 off and $80 coupon.”

Website insiders like the people who run “The Penny Hoarder”, that tries to find people good deals say there are tell-tale signs the coupon is not legitimate,

Christie Post with “The Penny Hoarder” said, “Right off the bat you can see what is wrong with it, store coupons from Publix typically don’t have a barcode and that is something we noticed right away, they usually have a number at the bottom of the coupon.”

Post adds, the creators of the fraudulent coupon are probably using it to try and gain personal information from Publix customers.

That doesn’t surprise regular Publix customer Dan Randall who said, “I tell you what every angle you can get they are after you every day to get your identity or try to scam people like this, it is ridiculous.”

Publix is trying to find out who could be behind the fake coupons that customers cannot use at any of its stores. Brian West a Publix spokesperson said, “The last thing we want to do is set them up for thinking that they are going to have some great savings and then not have that opportunity when they arrive at the store.”

Another obvious sign the coupon is a fake is it says the offer is tied to Publix to 89th anniversary celebration. The only problem, Publix has been in business for 86 years.MORE STORIES YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN:
