Sunrise Sale: Pajama-clad shoppers get discounts in downtown St. Pete

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) - It's being billed as St. Petersburg's largest pajama party with thousands expected to shop until they drop while roaming the downtown streets wearing their finest satin, silk and polyester PJs. St. Pete's annual "Sunrise Sale" could very well be the biggest pajama party in Tampa Bay.

"The Sunrise Sale is an icon in St. Pete and people call as early as January to ask about the pajama sale date. Over 50 businesses are getting involved this year. We are really excited," said Downtown Business Association president Katy Churchwell.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the blockbuster summer sale. Anyone who shows up at participating stores wearing their pajamas gets to take advantage of deep discounts.

"You get to enjoy a piece of downtown St. Pete in your pajamas. It's the highest grossing day of the year for a number of retailers and a great way to build a customer base," Churchwell said.

Yellow flags and bright balloons have been placed outside of businesses that are participating in the pajama-wearing discount shopping event. The Museum of Fine Arts is the designated staging area where organizers will be passing out free cake and maps all morning long.

There will also be a pajama contest with prizes wawarded to the most unique pajama outfit and the most local outfit.

The pajama shopping party starts at 6:43 a.m. and continues throughout the day.
