Mermaids to bring magical performance back to Weeki Wachee

Living Local

The world-famous Mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park can’t wait to splash their fins back into the water after testing out their sea legs on land for months.

Currently, due to renovations, mermaid shows have been put on hold.

But the wait for the magic to return is almost over and WFLA News Channel 8’s Lila Gross is getting a first look at the reimagined classic tale.

The Weeki Wachee Mermaids will perform their version of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid live in the submerged 400-seat auditorium come June 15.

This classic told unlike any other follows The Little Mermaid as she celebrates her birthday and comes face to face with her Prince. Yearning to have legs like him, she makes a deal with the sea witch to give her what she wants in exchange for her beautiful voice.

As the Prince struggles to save the Little Mermaid’s beautiful voice, a fierce battle ensues between him and the evil sea witch. The Prince prevails, proving that “Love conquers all.”

The State Park warns portions of this show may be scary to very young children.

Another performance called “fish tails” will put the mermaids to the test as they accomplish underwater feats from the past six decades, including eating and drinking underwater. The show has several musical numbers and tells the history of the enchanted place.

The mermaid shows are included with the price of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park admission.

Due to scheduled renovations, the show park is currently CLOSED, but the swimming area and kayak rentals are open daily. Waterslides are weekends only. Mermaid shows, river boat and wildlife program are scheduled to reopen June 15.

After June 15, Mermaid shows will run daily at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 pm.
