Another Highlands County teacher under investigation for alleged relationship with student

HIGHLANDS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fourth teacher in just two months for having an inappropriate relationship with a student. The latest investigation is dealing with a ninth grade language arts teacher from Sebring High School.

“An anonymous person called in and left a voice message on an answering machine,” Highlands County Sheriff Susan Benton said Thursday night.RELATED: Teacher-student misconduct investigation involves lewd photos, pornography

The male teacher reportedly had a relationship with a female student. The investigation is still in the early stages since the school was on spring break and the student said to be involved has moved out of state.

This is the second reported incident involving a Sebring High employee. Teacher Amanda Roser-Cannady and another teacher were accused of having provocative pictures of themselves or their students on their phones. Another middle school teacher, Stacy Hooks, was arrested for allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old student.

“I wasn’t really surprised,” Sheriff Benton said.

Benton told News Channel 8 she expected to hear more reports after holding a meeting earlier this month warning everyone to report child abuse or face charges. She said if teachers and parents think something is wrong, they need to report it.

Her office is continuing to investigate the school board when it comes to one of the cases.

The sheriff’s office also told News Channel 8 it’s too early to tell if the teacher in the latest case will be charged. On Thursday district officials wouldn’t tell News Channel 8 if the accused teacher is on paid leave.THE STORIES OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON:
