Amtrak suspends Southeast service; airlines warn travelers about Hurricane Matthew

(WFLA) – Amtrak announced Wednesday it’s suspending service in the Southeast because of Hurricane Matthew.

The following lines are cancelled for Thursday and Friday: The Silver Star 91 & 92 (New York City – Miami), Silver Meteor 97 & 98 (Miami – New York City) and the Auto Train 52 & 53 (Lorton, Va., – Sanford, Fla.). In addition, the Palmetto 89 & 90 (New York City – Savannah, Ga.) will only operate between New York City and Washington, D.C.

Airline companies are warning travelers about possible delays and cancellations related to Hurricane Matthew. Southwest Airlines and American Airlines both cautioned customers about the weather.

Southwest said service may be disrupted in various markets from now through Oct. 8. “Customers who are holding reservations to the destinations on the dates indicated above, and want to alter their travel plans may rebook in the original class of service or travel standby (within 14 days of their original date of travel between the original city-pairs and in accordance with our our accommodation procedures) without paying any additional charge,” the airline said in a statement.

“Customers holding reservations for a flight that is cancelled may request a refund for an unused ticket/travel itinerary,” Southwest’s statement says.

American Airlines is also telling customers to check their flight information. “When severe weather or other uncontrollable events impact your flight and travel dates, you may be able to change your trip with no change fee,” the airline says.
