2 injured after boat catches fire in St. Pete

News

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — Flames engulfed a sailboat with a mother and daughter trapped on board Tuesday afternoon. Fortunately, two good Samaritans came along to save them as the boat they called home began to sink.

We don’t know their names, but we do know they put their lives on the line in a matter of moments to save others, and now the family just wants to say “thank you.”

It’s unknown how the fire started, but two brave boaters responded and helped rescue the mother and daughter on board.

The father, Jahrah King, who was not on board at the time, tells News Channel 8 he’s very grateful!

“Hey, thanks a lot for saving my family’s life, and I really appreciate it,” he said.

He and his family were settled on their sail boat, getting ready for their youngest child to start school.

“This was our home, yes. We was cruising around, was about to, uh, go get a slip [because] she’s gonna start school, and everything was on board,” King said.

Eagle 8 HD watched from the air as all of their belongings sank to the bottom of the bay inside their boat.

Meanwhile, local groups like the Tampa Power Squadron says while boats are a wonderful place to call home, boating safety is a must.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission said the mother is recovering from second degree burns.

“So, many people buy a boat and they presume ‘how hard can it be? I’ve heard this said….just untie it and drive away, but that’s not true,” said Anna Morris, with the Tampa Power Squadron.

Fire extinguishers are a priority on board any boat.

“You pull the pin. You aim. You squeeze the trigger and for heaven’s sake, aim for the base of the fire….not where the flames are up in the air,” Morris said.

Meanwhile, King remains positive about his family’s future.

“Everybody’s fine, man so that’s all right. We’ll get another boat,” he said.STORIES THAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON
