(WFLA/NBC) – Thai authorities confiscated six large crates containing an estimated 1.6 million young European eels after they were smuggled into Thailand from Romania.
Friday, authorities said the total value of the haul was estimated at $1.2 million.
The investigation is ongoing and no suspect has been arrested, they added.
Thai Customs said they had been tracking a network suspected of smuggling the species, also known as Anguilla Anguilla, or glass eels, when they intercepted three crates Wednesday and another three crates Thursday.
Shipping documents said the crates contained “cool shrimp,” and indicated a Thai company as the buyer.
The director-general of Thailand’s Customs Department said it was unclear whether they were destined for another country, where demand for the eels might be higher.
