Space Force creation to begin without approval from Congress

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WFLA/WSFA) – President Trump has ordered the Pentagon to start developing a new military branch.

The U.S. Space Force and details on the development plans were leaked a day early.

The Department of Defense has begun taking steps to create the Space Force without approval from Congress.

The new military branch will control military operations in outer space.

New details on the plan to get it up and running were leaked a day ahead of the expected released of an official report.

Alabama Congressman Mike Rogers spoke of the plans during an “eggs and issues” breakfast in Montgomery on Tuesday.

"After looking at it, they have decided that the only way they're going to really be able to meet the challenges that we have going forward in space to fight and win wars; is to take the existing personnel that handles space issues within the Army, Air Force and Navy and separate them into a separate organization with their own budget, their own culture, educational system, etc,” he said.

“I'm excited about it because I can't talk in open about the threats that we face from China and Russia because they're all classified, but they are very real, and we have to do something different if we're going to meet that challenge."

The congressman confirmed the Space Force will use existing personnel and facilities.
