(NBC News) - A California teen recovering after a terrifying shark attack over the weekend that left him critically injured.
Keane Webre-Hayes, 13, was diving for lobsters Saturday morning in shallow water about 200 yards off shore at Beacon Beach near San Diego when the shark attacked.
"It was a very large shark bite, very deep down to the chest through the muscles," says pediatric surgeon Dr. Tim Fairbank.
He quickly got help from kayakers who brought him to shore, and was then helped by first responders and airlifted to a hospital.
"He's a warrior," his mother Ellie Hayes says. "I didn't know he was that good of a swimmer I'm really proud of him."
