TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) - Are the writers of "Game of Thrones" a bigger threat to Westeros than Cersei or the Night King?
A review in the British newspaper The Telegraph recently posed the question: "Has Game of Thrones been ruined beyond repair?" Now a Change.org petition asking HBO to remake the eight and final season of "Game of Thrones" with "competent" writers has passed 400,000 signatures.
"David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on. This series deserves a final season that makes sense. Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!" wrote Dylan D., the person behind the petition.
Critics of the show have complained of the season's rushed pacing say the fantasy drama has moved away from George RR Martin's books.
“The story fell apart, the characters became caricatures of themselves – and some worse, unrecognizable – and the world lost the cohesiveness and believe-ability it had maintained previously,” said one fan who signed the petition.
“I don’t want these two anywhere near Star Wars, either. This was abysmal," another added, taking a shot at showrunners Benioff and Weiss who are set direct the next installments of the sci-fi saga.
But what's a quarter of a million signatures, when millions are watching? About 18 million people tuned into the most recent episode of “Game of Thrones," so the writers will likely hold onto their jobs for now.
