Four Ways the Smartphone is Negatively Impacting Society

Daytime

1. The phone is changing the most basic of etiquette rules in our society.

2. The phone is forcing us to live in a disruptive and destructive way.

3. The phone is impacting our mental and physical well-being.

4. It is changing the way teens seek validation.

So, what are your suggestions for how we can do better? First is to admit we should do better when it comes to managing our phones which is as easy as putting your phone down and taking a look around you. You can’t walk into a coffee shop, restaurant, or down a sidewalk without 95% of people with their necks bent and eyes down staring at their phones. Think about your own use. Most of us are on the phones while we get ready, get kids out the door, while we are at work, children’s activities, while we’re cooking dinner, and some of us, if we’re being honest, use our phones behind the wheel of a car. We absolutely have to start a conversation about how we can better manage our phone habits, but we won’t be able to until we develop a set of universally accepted etiquette rules for how and when we text (in other words, when is a phone call more appropriate than a text, or an email more appropriate than both) and how and when we respond. Without these guidelines, people will never have the peace of mind to put their phones down, and we’ve got to more often.
