Justin Schecker joined the 8 On Your Side news team as a reporter in December 2019. Before moving to Tampa, Justin’s passion for journalism and storytelling took him across the country to TV stations in Connecticut, Arizona and Michigan.
He covered a variety of stories for NBC Connecticut including the lawsuit against the manufacturer of the gun used in the Sandy Hook school shooting, an outbreak of K2 overdoses in New Haven and wild weather in the form of nor’easters and tornadoes. Justin is proud of the series of stories he told about cancer survivors and families participating in the bike ride benefiting the Yale-New Haven Smilow Cancer Hospital.
While working for Tucson’s ABC affiliate KGUN 9 On Your Side, Justin reported on the Yarnell Hill Fire that killed 19 wildland firefighters, immigration issues and security on the U.S.-Mexico border. He also covered Super Bowl XLIX and two NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournaments.
After growing up in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., Justin graduated from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. A highlight of his college journalism career was covering the Northwestern football team’s appearance in the 2010 Outback Bowl at Raymond James Stadium.
When not reporting, Justin looks forward to exploring Tampa Bay and attending Bucs, Lightning and Rays games. He’s also excited to live closer to family in Broward County. Feel free to connect with Justin on social media and send news tips/story ideas to firstname.lastname@example.org.
