Tampa Bay is ‘family-friendly’ for many reasons

8 On Your Side

When it comes to topping the list, Tampa Bay is up there for families!

Home.com ranked Tampa as number 8 on its list of cities in the country.

While many people move to the Bay area because they want to live closer to amazing beaches, there are many other things that attract families.

“I would say there’s a lot going on all the time. There’s concerts usually downtown, we have free events. There’s always something going on in Tampa Bay,” says Alexis Perno who is a sophomore at Plant High School.

The quality of schools was a big deciding factor.  That makes sense as U.S. News and World Report ranked several of our area high schools among the best in the state.  Pine View School in Sarasota was ranked #1,  Plant High in South Tampa was ranked 29.

“We have great clubs, journalism, chorus is… they’re really good here,” says Kate Gramling a freshman at Plant High School.

Students say the fact that teachers knowing them by name makes all the difference.

“I think that says that they’re really trying their best. All of them are putting a ton of effort to get to know their kids and to figure out who every kid is and what works best for them,” says David Tuohy a sophomore at Plant High.

Crime rates were also considered in the rankings and one of the safer cities in our area is Sarasota.

“At the City of Sarasota, our vision is to be a delightful, world-class community for those who live here, and visit.”

“Many of our amenities make us family friendly, beginning with A-rated schools located in close-knit neighborhoods. After school, residents can enjoy world-renowned beaches, a variety of internationally recognized cultural arts venues, a walkable downtown district, spring training at Ed Smith Stadium and conveniently located activities galore, including golf, tennis, fishing, movies and all within easy access to our beautiful waterfront parks.”

“We’ve fostered a safe environment in our neighborhoods through community policing and by building positive relationships with our citizens, which has resulted in a walkable, vibrant, beautiful, diverse and environmentally healthy city where families can grow and prosper,” said Sarasota City Manager Tom Barwin.

Then there’s the hundreds of neighborhood, city, and state parks giving families plenty of places to enjoy the Florida sunshine. Like the Florida Botanical Gardens in Pinellas County.

“We’re one of the most world class park systems in the country,” says Kathy Barile a chief park ranger for Pinellas County.

Here, walkways wind by beautiful landscapes of nature and visitors can get a glimpse of wild animals in their natural elements.

“There’s a little bit of something for each person that wants it. Whether it be the beach, kayaking, canoeing, cycling. We have the Pinellas Trail, gardening, we have the gardens, history,” says Barile.

These are just some of the reasons the Tampa Bay area is family friendly!
