Picking the perfect place for your plants can make your landscaping look great

It doesn’t require much to give your yard a makeover as long as you know where to start digging! Much like a new coat of paint, new plants and flowers go a long way in making your home a pleasure for anyone who sees it.

Shea Hughes of Sunrise Landscape suggests that you start by looking for areas you enjoy or other homes that may have a style you like.

“You don’t have to have what I call a high profile display. You can spend your money one time and still have seasonal color, or just a nice strong clean, well maintained, laid out area,” says Hughes.

Start by clearing all of the old, overgrown, or dying vegetation; leaving good, quality features that already exist.

“Try and find your wires and your lights if you happen to have landscape lighting. If you have irrigation you’re going to want to flag your heads before you start to remove the material so you don’t break the heads and have to do excessive work,” says Hughes.

To make flowers pop surround them with a layer of green. Pick your focus. Like the front door or walkway.

“It’s in a high profile area where the eye or the pedestrian traffic is going to flow. So you want to look your best where the people go or see the most often,” says Hughes of the walkway up to the front of the house.

He also focuses on the patch of dirt near the garage where the homeowner will park often.

“What I’ve done here is put the blue daze for some permanent color. If a car comes in this way along the circular driveway or into the garage, that color is a splash of color,” says Hughes.

Also be aware that even though this is Florida, which seems warm and tropical, there are areas that do better with certain plants.

“There’s a cold line here. So in Pasco County, you would never want to plant a Christmas palm or a foxtail palm. You can, but mother nature will take it away from you, so you lose your investment,” explains Hughes.

While money still doesn’t grow on trees your investment can grow with a little patience.

“If you can’t afford a 12-foot tall foxtail palm you can get a 5 or 6-footer, or a 9-footer. You can let ‘Father Time’ bring the value to you,” says Hughes.

Once all the work is done an old home can look young if you know where to plant.

“It’s about framing the home,” exclaims Hughes.

Hughes recommends adding upkeep to your lawn every 12 to 18 months. That will keep your lawn looking fresh, and updated.
