Consumers would take hit if insurance lobby gets its way

Nearly two years after Hurricane Irma lashed Florida with powerful winds, rains and storm surge, John Oates remains out of his Hillsborough County home.

Oates tells 8 On Your Side that water poured through his roof 18 months ago, drenching the walls and floors and causing a ceiling to collapse.

Oates claims his insurance company offered him a check for 10 percent of the damages, which he calls laughable.

He is now suing the company for breach of contract, but if a Pensacola lawmaker gets his way, customers like John will be denied their day in court and be left short-changed.

I’ll have more on the story tonight at 6 p.m.
