8 On Your Side reports help prompt legislation for veterans suffering burn pit exposure

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. (WFLA) - Republican Congressman Gus Bilirakis announced Wednesday he is introducing legislation to protect veterans exposed to burn pits.

The congressman's action follows several 8 On Your side reports about illnesses suffered by veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Currently, the VA does not recognize toxic burn pit exposure as a contributing factor to several illnesses being reported by veterans of these wars.

This new legislation will provide presumption of service connection for exposure to toxic burn pits, which will enable veterans suffering from illnesses to immediately access VA medical care and disability benefits.

A news release from Congressman Bilirakis says, "This bill seeks to remedy an injustice that is keeping sick Veterans from being able to access the medical care and disability compensation benefits to which they should be entitled."
