Heart-O-Ween: Halloween special holiday for Tampa Bay woman

Halloween is a different kind of holiday for 22-year-old Madeline Jones. Five years ago on Halloween, Madeline got some lifesaving news. She needed a heart transplant and one had become available.

Madeline was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or thickening of the heart muscle, when she was just a year old.

Madeline’s parents knew their daughter would eventually need a heart transplant but they wanted to put that off as long as possible.

Finally at age 16, they could wait no longer.

Madeline was in heart failure and needed a new heart as soon as possible.

When she found out on Halloween the transplant would be happening, Halloween became Heart-o-Ween.

“The nurses in the ICU made me a good luck card that said, ‘happy Heart-W-Ween,'” Madeline said.

Madeline received the new heart just hours later on Nov. 1, 2013.

“It’s a huge milestone in my life every year. It’s another year that I have been healthy. I didn’t really think five years ago that I would be here today, so it’s an awesome day to celebrate,” said Madeline.
