RIVERVIEW, Fla. (WFLA) – Amy Cohn says getting SunPass to remove her vehicle registration hold has resulted in one headache after another.
“They said, ‘No, you owe $1,400.’ So I paid the $1,400 and said, ‘Will you give me my release?’ And they said, ‘Oh, yes, 24 hours guaranteed,'” Cohn said.
But that didn’t happen. She was told to pay $500 more, she says, and the hold would be released. But it wasn’t.
Then she found herself dealing with a third department, collections, and they wanted $1,100 more.
Cohn is a cancer patient and uses SunPass to travel from Riverview to doctors appointments. She admits that when she moved, she didn’t update her address with SunPass and owed them for old tolls. But every time she pays, she says SunPass wants more.
“Every department tells me they can clear this if I give them money, but they’re not releasing it,” Cohn said.
She claims she’s not even credited for what she’s paid.
“‘We don’t even have your $1,400,'” they told me. “‘We don’t care what your app says, we don’t have it.'”
8 On Your Side contacted a spokeswoman for SunPass and was told they couldn’t release details because of privacy policies but they would have a supervisor call Cohn and figure out these charges.
In the meantime, Cohn decided to pay the $1,100 and have her registration renewed. But now she wants a refund for some of the other money she already paid.
“I know that I didn’t charge $3,000 in tolls,” she said. “I don’t even work.”
