TAMPA (WFLA) - Tampa, Fla. (WFLA) - The horror stories caused by identity theft are way too common.
"Somebody had purchased $99 worth of gas at a station in Riverview and I knew it wasn't me. My car can't hold that much gas.," Carlos Llerandi said, after his identity theft was stolen.
Crooks even took over his bank account.
"She had my name, my address, my phone number, my birth date, my social security number, my checking account that I had used at that time," said Diane Fowler, after her identity was stolen.
Rodney Sapyta found himself in trouble after his checkbook was stolen.
"They went to one location and without a driver's license, in a drive-through, withdrew $3,000. They drove down the street to the next location and pulled out another $3,000."
One in three Floridians have been the victim of identity theft in the past two years. Millions of Americans had personal information stolen in breaches. You never know when those crooks will strike.
But in other cases, you yourself may hand over your private information without even realizing it. That's why AAA is teaming up with News Channel 8 for Saturday's annual Shred-A-Thon.
"Identity fraud is actually the fastest growing crime in the United States," said Mark Jenkins, of AAA. "Every two seconds, there is a new victim."
Here's what you need to know:
You can bring up to 8 boxes of personal documents including paper and even electronic devices. We accept personal documents, no businesses. And remember, no metal binders and no cardboard.
Come out to the third annual Shred-A-Thon presented by AAA from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, April 13 at the North Parking Lot of Raymond James Stadium, which is located at 4201 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa.
We will be closing the gates at noon so we can make sure everyone gets to the shredder before the event is over. If you are in line at noon, you will be able to shred.
Our friends at AAA will be onsite entering everyone in line for a chance to win a Royal Caribbean cruise! You can only win if you enter during the event so, the odds are in your favor.
News Channel 8 anchors will be on hand, visiting car to car, handing out giveaways! Look for The Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleaders and mascot Captain Fear to pop up in the car line to say some hellos and snap some selfies to share on your social media pages!
Get in line early!
