POLK COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

John Batton knows Old Dixie Highway. He's live on the road in Polk County, near Auburndale and Lakeland, for the last fifty years.

"It's just a bad situation," Batton said.

He's glad construction crews started putting in sidewalks Friday.

"It's a narrow road with no shoulders," Batton said. "There's just nowhere for them to go. Kids walk on the street to school in the dark."

In just the last five years, two teens have been  hit and killed on Old Dixie Highway. Enrique Hernandez died about a year ago on his way to Tenoroc High School.

The first stage of construction should be done in early October. This is just the first of three sections of sidewalk along the west side of Old Dixie Highway. The 1,300-foot area between Schalamar Creek Drive and Carroll Road includes a six-foot wide concrete walkway. Crews will also construct a pedestrian bridge to cross Schalamar Creek.

If you live in the area, here is the road closure information - Starting Sunday, August 10, Old Dixie Hwy. will be closed for a week to thru-traffic between Schalamar Creek Drive and Carroll Road. Detours bypassing work zone will be along Fish Hatchery Road and Berkley Road.

Another closure for offloading and positioning bridge is scheduled on October 20 to coincide with a student holiday. Advance public notice will alert motorists, area residents and school staff to changing traffic conditions and detour routes.
