LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

The trial for the man accused of killing a Lakeland police officer in 2011 got a late start Friday.

Opening statements began in the case against Kyle Williams who is charged in the death of Lakeland police officer Arnulfo Crispin.

The case was set to begin at 9am but due to a medical issue of an attorney, the judge postponed them until 1pm.

Judge Donald Jacobsen did use the morning hour to explain some ground rules for the all-white jury of five men and 11 women.

The jurors are not to talk about the trial with anyone outside of the jury and not discuss the proceedings on social media.

Several members of the Lakeland Police Department showed up to support the fallen officer, Arnulfo Crispin, who was fatally shot in December of 2011 in a park on Crystal Grove Lane in Lakeland.

Kyle Williams, 21, is accused of killing Crispin who was 25 at the time.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
