RALEIGH, N.C. -

Raleigh is back on top of the Forbes magazine list of cities with the best business climates.

Raleigh had previously been ranked No. 1 in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011 and was third last year.

But this year, Raleigh zoomed back ahead of Des Moines, Iowa, after Forbes “crunched the numbers on every metro area to figure out who has the best and worst business climates.”

Raleigh was the only city on the East Coast to make the Top 10. Charlotte came in at No. 12.

Forbes praised Raleigh for having a high percentage of adults with college degrees. Of Raleigh adults, 42 percent have college degrees, Forbes said, well ahead of the national average of 30 percent.

Forbes also said Raleigh’s business costs “are 18 percent below the national average.”

Maybe Raleigh's economic success is one reason the area placed high in another ranking - that of "happiest" metro areas. A study by the University of British Columbia ranked Raleigh-Durham fourth in the United States for "happiness." (No. 1 was Richmond-Petersburg and New York was last).

On the Forbest list, North Carolina didn’t get out of the list unscathed, however. Hickory was a dismal 191th on the list, not far from last-place Atlantic City, N.J.
