NEW TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

John and Patti Ferrell's college-age daughter, Lindsay, drives this Jeep Liberty at Florida State, in Tallahassee.

Last June, the family heard about a recall involving the SUV that warned of a possible fire risk in the event of a low-speed, rear-end crash.

“My wife and I have taken turns calling them for the past 13 months trying to get some type of action going with this thing,” Said John Ferrell.

The answer they get is always the trailer hitch parts to strengthen the rear area near the gas tank aren't available.

These parents are afraid of what could happen if Lindsay got into a wreck. She'll return from studies in London next month. “More than frustration, fear, I don't want to send her back to school knowing that she has that type of vehicle,” Said Patti Ferrell.

Dealers would like nothing more than to help their customers get recall work completed.

At Jerry Ulm Dodge Chrysler Jeep people call the service department every day.

But without the parts, they can't help. “Our customer's safety is very, very important to use here at Jerry Ulm, and we'll be contacting them personally here in the near future as soon as we are made aware of parts availability,” said Service Manager, Mike Martinez.

And that day may be coming soon. Soon after speaking to the Service Manager, he called to let us know, parts for this recall are going out now.

The Ferrells, who don't blame the dealership for the delays, are skeptical. “We'll see. I've heard it before,” said John Ferrell.

Chrysler has until Wednesday, to show the federal government how it will make enough parts to fix all the SUV’s affected.

That includes older model Jeep Grand Cherokees as well.
