TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

A Bay Area man says a five million dollar project to improve safety on Fletcher Avenue is making things worse.

Construction began in August of 2013 on Fletcher to improve sidewalks, add bike lanes and put in pedestrian friendly islands and crosswalks.

Allen Cheek called Eight on Your Side to say the construction project has become a danger zone for people who walk and ride bikes in the area.

Cheek took a number of photos showing deep sand covering the sidewalk and holes along the side of the road.

" This for me, if I'm on a bicycle, which I frequently am, the loose sand is unsafe," said Cheek.

Eight on your Side contacted County Commissioner Les Miller.

The area is in his district and Miller admits it is a concern.

"Fletcher Avenue had been neglected and we are going in there now with the money we were able to get from FDOT and the county and improving Fletcher Avenue," said Miller.

Miller called county staff after the problem was brought to his attention and asked that the sidewalk be maintained during the construction phase to make it safer for people who have to use it every day.

Cheek says he's noticed a change.

"Oh yes, there has been a considerable change in the last couple of days, where they've made a good effort to come out and clean up the sidewalk," said Cheek.

Commissioner Miller says when the project is complete it should make things much better for people who walk and ride bikes along the street.

"That's why we are going in there, because it's been neglected," said Miller.
