SARASOTA, FL (WFLA) - A great white shark being tracked by scientists for nearly a year has made her way to Sarasota waters.

Katharine, as the massive shark is called, is now making her way across the Gulf of Mexico, pinging near Sarasota Monday.

The 14-foot female shark was tagged by Mote Marine scientists with OCEARCH in August 2013 in Cape Cod, Mass.

Katharine was pinging around Saint Petersburg last week. Prior to that she was in the Gulf waters south of Panama City. Sharks are pinged when their dorsal fin breaks the surface of the water. Katharine has traveled more than 5,300 miles.

You can track Katharine and other sharks at www.ocearch.org.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is changing management rules of invasive lionfish to remove them from state waters. Lionfish was introduced to state waters in the 1980s, and since then, populations have boomed in recent years, negatively impacting native wildlife and habitat, the FWC says.
