According to a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office report the suspect was in possession of multiple driver’s licenses, gift cards, credit cards and blank check when deputies arrested him. Detectives with PCSO’s Burglary and Pawn Unit were investigating a series of fraudulent credit card transactions over the last few months when they noticed a pattern.

The suspect was entering vehicles parked in various residential neighborhoods in Pasco and Pinellas counties and was taking items such as receipts, credit card statements and other personal identification items.

The report states that investigators soon identified Mathis as a potential suspect. He was located, questioned and charged with one count of grand theft, one count of possession of stolen property, one count of drug possession, one count of resisting an officer and one count of burglary.

Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues. Detectives believe Mathis has committed similar crimes in the Bay area.

The suspect is no stranger to law enforcement. He’s been arrested a handful of times and has served one stint in the state prison system for a drug trafficking conviction out of Pinellas County.

If you have any information about Mathis or this case, please contact Detectives Steve Tacia with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Burglary and Pawn Unit at 727-582-6200.
