Beaufort County officials prepare for hurricane impact

WASHINGTON, N.C. - Emergency management planners in Beaufort County met Wednesday to go over their plan for the storm as parts of the County are expected to see storm surge and flooding.

"Roads flood, trees fall, your power goes out," said Anna Shaw.

That’s what Shaw expects just about every summer when severe weather hits. She and her husband live in Bear Grass and have gotten used to expecting the unexpected.

"If you don't like it in the morning, just wait for the afternoon because it changes rather quickly over here,” said Shaw.

That’s why Amber Cowan and her two daughters spent the day in Little Washington.

"We're just down here trying to enjoy the Waterfront and get some sunshine in before Friday," said Cowan.

While areas of the Waterfront could see high waters and potential flooding, Beaufort County emergency officials say their problem areas will likely be towns like Aurora and Belhaven.

“The fire departments and the EMS will split the roads up and go door to door tonight and tomorrow,” said emergency services coordinator John Pack.  He says they’ll go out and tell folks on flood hazard roads they may not be able to get out for a couple days.

Pack says with the threat of a tropical storm turned hurricane, public safety and emergency crews will keep a close eye on Bay City Road and West Road in Aurora.

“That's where we had the most tremendous flooding during Hurricane Irene where we had 9 feet of storm surge and we rescued 55 people along those roads,” said Pack.

That’s a situation Beaufort County doesn’t want to encounter again. Officials say everyone should take this storm seriously and follow all safety precautions.
