BROOKSVILLE, FL (WFLA) -

A Brooksville woman is charged with aggravated manslaughter after investigators say she gave birth to a baby in the shower, then put the baby in a trash bag.

Brooksville Police and fire rescue units responded to a 911 call on April 28 about a newborn child that was not breathing.

They arrived to find the newborn child dead, according to BPD.

Detectives say that the child's mother Maria Castillo, 27, gave birth to the baby a few hours earlier while taking a shower.

Castillo told detectives that she did not tell her family about the birth and put the baby in a bathroom trash bag, then took the child to her bedroom.

Investigators say the baby remained in the trash bag, and was partially covered with clothing while lying on the floor, to conceal her from view.

Castillo's family learned of the birth and called 911.

Castillo was charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and booked into the Hernando County Jail with bond set at $30,000.
