ZEPHYRHILLS, FL (WFLA) -

Deputies are investigating a deadly deputy-involved shooting in Zephyrhills.

It happened Tuesday afternoon in a parking lot near Big Ben Tires at 4128 Gall Blvd. around 4:30 p.m. Sheriff Chris Nocco tells News Channel 8 that detectives had been investigating Jerry Brown, 41.

Sheriff Nocco says undercover narcotics detectives were buying pills from Brown at the tire store. Brown has a violent history, says Sheriff Nocco, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and drug charges.

Speaking on Tuesday night to News Channel 8, Brown's fiancee, Erika Albury, painted a very different picture of the man she planned to marry at the end of the year.

"He's a great guy," Albury said. "He's just been in some trouble in the past, that's all."

Detectives tried to arrest Brown on a drug trafficking charge, but they say that's when things turned violent.

"When you're dealing with drugs, as you see in our county, you're dealing with very violent individuals," said Sheriff Nocco. "The suspect that was here [Brown], he's already been arrested for kidnapping, two armed robberies, and now we have him for drug trafficking."

Sheriff Nocco says the deputies were forced to make a split-second decision, and shoot.

Albury is having a tough time understanding how this happened.

"It's ridiculous," Albury said. "It's stupid. There's no reason to shoot somebody."

Albury told News Channel 8 that Brown is not a violent person.

Sheriff Nocco disagrees.

"This is just another sad reminder in our community when there's violence, there's drugs always related to that, and that's one of the big problems we're seeing out here," said Sheriff Nocco.
