Latest GM recall rattles loyal Pasco customers

Posted: Updated:
NEW PORT RICHEY, FL (WFLA) -

News of a new recall for certain GM vehicles has a New Port Richey family reconsidering their next car purchase.

“My whole family has driven GM our entire life. And my family is no longer loyal customers,” said Maura Craig-Roach.

Craig-Roach is a Saturn Ion owner, who is frustrated after a series of problems getting her faulty ignition switch fixed.

A St. Petersburg Chevy dealer put her in a rental while her car sat for three long months.

“They don't have the parts,” Craig-Roach said. “They told us that they got a couple of parts a week … so sit tight … their lot had about 200, 300 cars waiting to have the same experience done.”

Her situation is not unique. GM is recalling more than 8 million cars, mostly Malibus, SUVs and trucks. The new announcement is on top of earlier recalls.

All told, it adds up to more than 30 million vehicles recalled by General Motors this year.

Craig-Roach’s family is fed up.

“Once I started doing research on it, and finding out that people's cars were shutting off while they were driving, that was scary,” said Michael Roach.

8 On Your Side called a number of Bay area Chevy dealers. Many expressed frustration at GM for not telling them what's going on before recall news hits the media.

Customers are frustrated too. One dealer reported that employees answer phones 12 hours a day about the recalls.

To make matters worse for the Roach family, the wait for their ignition ruined their battery.

“No more GM and this is even us going through the corporate chain,” Maura Craig-Roach said. “We went to Better Business Bureaus, we talked to corporate. Nothing was done. They said, ‘so sorry for your loss’.”

Also Monday, GM announced it will not cap payments to customers and families hurt or killed when GM cars shut off and caused wrecks.
