Fuquay-Varina teen drowns on Outer Banks

Posted: Updated:

A 16-year-old boy from Fuquay-Varina drowned Saturday on the Outer Banks after being caught in a rip current, authorities confirmed Monday afternoon.

The body of Thomas Harman, 16, was discovered Monday at approximately 10:15 a.m., Sheriff Susan D. Johnson of Currituck County said.

Harman was a rising junior at Fuquay-Varina High School.

On Saturday at 4 p.m., several people were having trouble in the water around the 15-mile post at the “Old Tides Inn” area near Corolla. Bystanders were able to reach two of the swimmers and pull them to safety but were unable to get to the third person, authorities said.

Searchers looked for Harman, but his body wasn’t discovered for two days.

His body was found Monday at mile post 13 and sent to the medical examiner’s office in Greenville.
