A water main break shut down a portion of West Street near Peace Street.
RALEIGH, N.C. -
A portion of West Street near Peace Street reopened early Monday morning after being closed due to a water main break Sunday afternoon.
Police said when the break first occurred, pieces of asphalt shot into the air.
"It was shooting up over the power line 30 to 40 feet," witness Michael Palcowski said. "I thought somebody had run over a fire hydrant. [I was] trying to figure out what was going on -- it was shooting rocks and clay all over the road."
The road between Peace and Harrington streets was replaced.
