Revelers pack St. Pete for Gay Pride celebration

Posted: Updated:
ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

It is a day of celebration for the area LGBT community.

The crowd is gathering for the first nighttime St. Pete Gay Pride Parade, which kicks off at sunset.

The streets are expected to be filled with revelers rain or shine. More than 100,000 attendees are expected to participate.

The festivities will include another first. Mayor Rick Kriseman's appearance in tonight's parade will mark the first time a St. Petersburg mayor has taken part in the annual celebration.

The St. Pete Gay Pride Festival is considered the largest of its kind in the state, attracting more than 80,000 people each year.

The festival's support extends beyond the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. It appeals to people of diverse backgrounds.

This year, the former one-day festival has been expanded to a weekend event.

The event launched Friday night with a concert.

Activities continue today with a block party on Central Avenue at 5 p.m. followed by the Pride Parade kicking off in front of George's Alibi at sunset expected about 8:30 p.m.

The celebration concludes with the Pride street festival on Central Avenue Sunday afternoon.
