Cumberland County reported its ninth case of rabies for the year after officials tested a bat found in Fayetteville.
A woman found a bat in her bedroom in a residence on Northview Drive Thursday morning, officials said. The woman told officials the bat barely touched her hand.
The woman eventually swatted the bat with a broom and stepped on it, officials said.
Animal Control picked up the bat and sent it for testing. But the areas needed for proper testing were too badly damaged to get a satisfactory result, officials said.
An unsatisfactory rabies test result is treated as a positive.
The woman touched by the bat is receiving medical treatment, officials said.
