SAFETY HARBOR, FL (WFLA) -

Safety Harbor in Pinellas County is on the list of the Road Runners Club of America's top five communities nation-wide that are runner-friendly.

The criteria for the designation included community infrastructure and local government support for running. The communities the club picked all have infrastructures that can foster physical activity in a safe environment. They also have a proven track record of organizations and businesses working together to promote it.

The club holds important the positive relationship between the running community and the local government. According to the club's website, Safety Harbor meets these criteria.

The website mentions Safety Harbor's year-round runner-friendly weather and safe, well-maintained sidewalks. There are several running clubs in Safety Harbor including the West Florida Y Running Club.

The city is home to the Bayshore Linear Greenway Recreational Trail, which begins at the Marina fountain and connects to the Ream Wilson trail.

"Not only does Safety Harbor have beautiful, safe places to run, it is a community of runners," noted Lisa Kothe, Library Director for Safety Harbor Public Library. "Any time of the day, even in the heat of a Florida summer, runners can be spotted along Bayshore Boulevard."

The other cities on the RRCA's list are Belleville, IL, Richmond, VA, Rockwall, TX and Spokane, WA
