CLAYTON, N.C. -

Several home were evacuated and a portion of Business U.S. 70 was closed Monday evening on the Wake and Johnston county line due to a natural gas leak.

PSNC Energy said a release valve went off at a regulator station just of Business 70 near Guy Road in Clayton around 7:30 p.m. An officer on the scene said the gas shot more than 50 feet into the air.

All four lanes of the road were closed between TV Tower Road to Woodmere Drive for a little more than 2 hours while crews worked to cap the leak. Homes around the area were also evacuated as a precaution while the leak was capped.

PSNC said the leak was capped around 8:50 p.m. and crews are still working to determine the cause of the leak.

No one in the area lost their gas service during the leak.
