CARY, N.C. -

A local food bank needs donations to continue to help families in need.

Officials with Dorcas Ministries in Cary said demand is up in the summer but supplies are down. The food bank has already helped more than 130 eligible families this year.

Volunteers expect that number to double. Now that school is out and summer is here, officials said it's important not to forget about the kids who reply on free and reduced lunch.

"For some of those kids what that means is missing that main, staple meal that they counted on in school," said Executive Director for Dorcas Ministries, Howard Manning. "But now that school is no longer in session, food pantries like Dorcas and others in the area are trying to fill in the gap to make sure those kids get one good meal a day during the summer."

The food bank needs items like sugar, flour, dinner kits like hamburger helper, spaghetti sauce, toiletries and more. For more information, visit www.dorcas-cary.org.
