Alert truck stop workers spotted missing Valrico teen with sex offender

Posted: Updated:
GROSSE TETE, LA (WFLA TV) - When Fawn Domingue saw a grown man and a teenage girl walk up to her register at the Tiger truck-stop in Grosse Tete, Louisiana early Thursday morning, her heart stopped.

“It was a big gasp,” her manager Scott Hollbrook said of Domingue’s reaction.

Knowing she had to act fast, Domingue suggested the pair, now known to be 16-year-old Ashley Lyon and 41-year-old Steven Myers, go to Hollbrook’s register to purchase the pack of cigarettes.

“They looked tired,” Holbrook said. Ashley appeared “fine but maybe a little scared,” he added.

Domingue went straight to her phone and pulled up Nancy Grace’s Facebook page where she thought she’d seen the pair in a story about a teenager from Valrico, Florida who had gone missing and was suspected to be on the run with a registered sex offender with whom she’d befriended.

Domingue realized it was a match. She ran outside and took down the license tag of the truck Myers was driving and told Hollbrook to call 911.

Hollbrook said the store was especially busy and that he had a line about 15-people deep. He admits he didn’t have time to answer all the questions dispatch had for him so sternly told them to hurry up and get on the scene.

“They were there in one minute,” Hollbrook said.

When deputies arrived they saw Myers. When Myers realized he’d been spotted, he fled, leading authorities on a 40-mile chase. Along the way Myers crashed into four vehicles in an attempt to block traffic. Iberville Sheriff’s Office deputies managed to deploy stop sticks and deflate the tires on Myers’ truck.

Myers got out of the truck with a knife. He had stab wounds to his body, which authorities believe were self inflicted. Inside the truck they found Ashley Lyon with multiple stab wounds.

The news rocked an already emotional Todd Lyon, Ashley’s uncle.

“This man is not a man. He stabbed my niece,” Todd Lyon said. “When I heard she was found, I felt incredible. Then I learned she was stabbed.”

Ashley Lyon was originally listed in critical condition at a Louisiana hospital, but her condition was upgraded to serious but stable condition late Thursday morning, according to Lafayette Police. Her mother left Florida early Thursday morning to see her.

Just a block away from Lyon's Valrico home, the son of Steven Myers is trying to come to grips with all the developments. He said he hates his father right now and is concerned about Ashley, who is his close friend.

Back in Louisiana, the crew at Tiger truck stop is praying for Ashley’s recovery.

Holbrook said he believes in miracles. After all, the cashier who recognized the pair wasn’t even scheduled to work that night, but chose to cover for someone. And Holbrook typically wouldn’t be so short with dispatchers, but the store was unusually very busy with customers.

“God was in this store,” Holbrook said.
