LAND O' LAKES, FL (WFLA) -

A family walk turned to tragedy Wednesday morning in Land O' Lakes when a van hit and killed a 9-year-old boy and his dog.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators say at 7:45 a.m. a Chevy Express van driven by John Ryals, 21, hit Anita Pallares and her two sons, Jorge age 9, and David age 7, as the family was walking their dog along Bahai Loop.

Anita Pallares and her son Jorge were transported to Bayonet Point Hospital where Jorge later died. David Cruz was airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital where he is in stable condition. The family's dog died at the scene of the crash, according to FHP.

Investigators say the family was walking in the eastbound direction on the correct side of the road, but Ryals failed to see them.

Charges are pending, according to FHP.

The Pallares family and John Ryals live in Land O' Lakes.
