Free assistance programs for kids this summer in Pinellas

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - Swim Lessons in Clearwater

Clearwater’s Ross Norton Recreation & Aquatics Complex received a donation to provide free swimming lessons to children in low-income families. The center is located at 1426 S. Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue. The program seeks to prevent child drowning deaths. 

The City of Clearwater offers swim classes and open swim opportunities at three additional facilities: the Long Center’s indoor pool, 1501 N. Belcher Road; Morningside Pool, 2400 Harn Blvd; and Clearwater Beach Family Aquatic Center, 69 Bay Esplanade.

Free Summer Food Program in St. Petersburg

City of St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation sponsors the Summer Food Service Program for children at recreation playcamps during the months of June, July and August. Nutritionally balanced meals are provided to all children 18 years old and younger, are eligible for breakfast and/or lunch at no charge.

The following are participating sites with breakfast and lunch service now through August 16:

Campbell Park Center, 601 14th St. S. from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and noon - 1:30 p.m.
Childs Park Center, 4301 13th Ave. S. from 8 - 9:30 a.m. and noon - 2 p.m.; Frank Pierce Center, 2000 7th St. S. from 8:15 - 9:30 a.m. and noon - 2 p.m.
Gladden Park Center, 3901 30th Ave. N. from 8 - 9:30 a.m. and 11:45 – 2 p.m.
J.W. Cate Center, 5801 22nd Ave. N. from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. and noon - 2 p.m.
Lake Vista Center, 1401 62nd Ave. S. from 8 - 9:30 and 11:30 - 2 p.m.
Roberts Center, 1246 50th Ave. N. from 8 - 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 - 1:30 p.m.
Shore Acres Center, 4230 Shore Acres Blvd. NE from 8 - 9:30 a.m. and noon - 1 p.m.
Walter Fuller Center, 7891 26th Ave. N. from 8 - 9:30 and noon - 12:45 p.m,
Wildwood Center, 1000 28th St. S. from 8 - 9:30 a.m. and noon - 1:30 p.m.
Willis Johns Center, 6635 Dr. M. L. King Jr. St. N. from 8:15 - 9:30 a.m. and noon - 1:30 p.m.
Camp Redbird at Azalea Elem., 1680 74th St. N. from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. and noon - 1 p.m.
TASCO Building 1320 5th St. N. from 8 - 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 - 1:30
Boyd Hill Preserve, 1101 Country Club Way S. (lunch site only) noon - 1 p.m.

Free Summer Meal

The summer food service program called Summer BreakSpot runs June 9 through Aug. 13, Monday through Friday, serving free breakfast and lunch to children 18 and under. Breakfast is typically served between 7 to 9 a.m. and lunch, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

This summer, Summer BreakSpot expects to serve more than 7,000 lunches to children in Pinellas County—that’s 1,000 more meals than the year before. The federally funded program administered by the Florida Department of Agriculture, and locally sponsored and implemented by Pinellas County Schools, offers hot and cold meal choices at 130 locations.  FIND A LOCATION NEAR YOU.
